Karumba is situated on the mouth of the Norman River and is the centre of the Gulf's prawning industry. The surrounding environment is composed of flat wetlands which extend inland for approximately 30 kilometres. These wetlands are a series of meandering saltwater tidal estuaries, the native habitat for saltwater crocodiles and a vast array of bird species such as pelicans, cyrus cranes, brolgas and black swans.
The Gulf Savannah is an interesting region to visit all year, however during the monsoon season, transportation methods must be carefully considered, as some parts of the Gulf Savannah region suffer from a lack of road infrastructure.
Karumba lies approximately 750 kilometres east of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria, or 570 kilometres north of Mt Isa.
Nearest Highway: Gulf Suvannah Way-East to Cairns and West to Darwin, Matilda Highway south to Mt Isa.
Nearest Airport: Cairns ( 782 Kilometres )

I arrived here today and went to see the Port and Boat Ramp in the Town Centre. There were a few shops...a nursery and a cafe open, the rest closed on Saturday afternoon.  Tomorrow I will return to do a tour with Ferryman Tours to see birds and then the sunset.
I drove to The Point where I had booked in at the Caravan Park. Both parks, and the one in town centre, are full...hundreds of caravans and tourists. This is really a popular destination. Tonight the Caravan Park had entertainment and a free seafood barbecue. There were over 500 people there crowded at the laden tables enjoying the singers and the band.
We had dinner at the Tavern and was treated to the most beautiful sunset. The sunsets here go on for 4 hours and it is breathtakingly beautiful
